WORKING WITH ENERGY

Portfolio Activity! This counts toward your final grade!

What are my objectives while studying this topic?

You’ll research two organisations involved with energy. Your first organisation needs to be involved with energy production or distribution from fossil fuels, and your second organisation must be involved with the application of domestic hot water systems.

Why is this important?

Energy is BIG business. For example, in the UK the energy generation and supply company E-ON had a total revenue of £8.5 billion for the year ending 2006!

To get a good grasp of this topic you’ll need to answer the following questions:

  • Who works with energy?

  • How do these organisations and companies affect our lives and the environment and community that we live in?

  • What products and services do they supply?

  • How do they use science to maximise their business?

Can I get an introduction to this topic?

Yes, why not have a look at the following clips:

Let’s get to it: what do I need to do?

Activity

You’ll need to write a written report that includes an explanation of the impact of two domestic energy related organisations on the community and environment.

The structure of the company

This piece of work counts towards your Portfolio Grade!

Working with energy

Power Station

This is a portfolio activity which forms part of the assessment for this Unit. (Report b: ‘A report on the application of domestic energy and the community, including the formation, extraction and use of a fossil fuel in the context of a domestic hot water heating system report and the impact of two energy related organisations involved with this process’).

Boiler Man

You need to include in your written report for this section an explanation of the impact of two domestic energy related organisations on the community and environment.

one organisation involved with energy production or distribution from carbon-based (fossil) fuels.

AND

The second organisation involved with the application of domestic hot water systems.

Use a search engine to find suitable adverts from energy companies:

Use a local services directory, such as Yellow Pages, or Thomson Local to compile a list of local companies involved with:

a)Energy production or distribution

b)Domestic hot water

For each organisation you need to address each of the following points IN DETAIL:

  • Explain the application of the organisation to domestic energy usage
(Help: Higher level work will involve a comprehensive assessment of what the company does and how the organisation exploits domestic energy usage to their advantage)

  • Report in terms of their contribution to the economy, waste management, energy consumption, need for transport and communication and local employment

(Help: Higher level work will involve a personal assessment by the candidate, ie opinions based on the information researched)

  • Explain the benefits to the local, national and global community of the use of science and technology by your chosen energy related organisations

(Help: Higher level work will involve a personal assessment by the candidate, ie opinions based on the information researched. It is expected that candidates will also include numerical and graphical data to support their opinions.)

  • Discuss the reasons for any constraints that the organisations work under

(Help: Higher level work will involve a comprehensive list of constraints, and an assessment of their impact on the organisation, and how the organisation works to minimise the impact of these constraints)

  • Explain the range of energy related usage and/or products offered by your chosen energy related organisations

(Help: Higher level work will involve detailed explanation of the science behind each use/product or service, and how the organisation maximises the use of science to their advantage)

You will be assessed on the following criteria:

What other things can help and contribute to my portfolio in this topic?

You could start by making a Mindmap of the different organisations that you could use for your reports. You could use eMindmaps for this:

You could then compile a third Mindmap explaining the sections of the report:

  • Application of the organisation to domestic energy usage

  • Contribution to the economy, waste management, energy consumption, need for transport and communication and local employment

  • Benefits to the local, national and global community of the use of science and technology by your chosen energy related organisations

  • Constraints that the organisations work under

  • Range of energy related usage and/or products offered by your chosen energy related organisations

Activity

Part of your assessment requires you to use other people’s work, such as adapting standard procedures or finding out and using information on the internet. When you use information like this you need to reference it properly in your reports. The following link takes you to a suitable method for referencing:

Portfolio Follow-up

Portfolio work will be marked in accordance to the appropriate assessment criteria:

What are the key words to learn and use?

  • Application

  • Contribution

  • Benefits

  • Constraints

  • Range

How long will this topic take to study?

On average you’ll be looking at about 10 hours. This includes taught time and independent study.
